On December 6, volunteers gathered at The Catholic University of America to plant 30 new trees and gain hands-on experience caring for DC’s growing urban canopy. Across two simultaneous events on campus, participants learned how proper planting and maintenance techniques can make a lasting difference for the city’s trees.
These activities were part of a broader initiative to share best practices in tree planting and care with DC residents. Casey Trees, a nonprofit dedicated to restoring, enhancing, and protecting the capital region’s tree canopy, has partnered with the Crimsonbridge Foundation to expand access to digital educational resources on topics like tree planting, watering, pruning, and young tree care.

During the event, volunteers practiced foundational skills—planting trees at the correct depth, applying mulch properly, removing competing weeds, and watering to support long-term establishment. These details may seem small, but they are vital for helping young trees take root and thrive, ultimately providing shade, beauty, and cleaner air for years to come.
Volunteers also learned that fall and early winter can be an ideal time to plant trees. Cooler temperatures reduce heat and drought stress, allowing roots to settle before spring growth begins. With a few thorough waterings before winter and consistent care through the first two to three years, these newly planted trees will grow stronger and healthier.

For practical guidance on planting and caring for trees, visit caseytrees.org/planting-a-tree, which features an instructional video available in both English and Spanish. By supporting community-based training and education, the Crimsonbridge Foundation and Casey Trees are helping residents become active stewards of their neighborhoods. Each event like this strengthens not only the health of DC’s urban forest but also the connection between people and the natural environment that sustains us all. Together, we’re planting more than trees—we’re cultivating knowledge, community, and a greener future.
