Launched in 2015, the first program grants made by Crimsonbridge were to organizations providing affordable, high-quality English language instruction for adults in the Greater Washington region. Over the past ten years, we have witnessed the incredible impact of community partners that foster welcoming environments for English language learners to acquire the skills needed to fully participate in the civil, social, and economic life of the United States.

The Foundation’s grantmaking in this area has been strategic, with support focused on organizations seeking to expand successful models, seed innovation, and implement new technology. Jennifer Katac, Executive Director of BEACON for Adult Literacy, shared, “Our partnership has ushered in a new era where innovative tools empower our adult English language learners to assume greater control over their educational journeys.”

Over the past ten years, our partners have accomplished the following:

  • Expanded programming to meet the ever-growing demand for adult English language classes in the region

  • Designed virtual and hybrid class models and digital learning tools

  • Created mobile apps for English language learners to obtain additional instruction time outside of class

  • Built a navigator system for English language learners at a local community college seeking to transition to academic or workforce training programs

  • Developed industry-specific English language curricula focused on skills development in various industries, including the culinary arts, hospitality, early childhood education, and manufacturing

  • Launched a culturally competent plan to pilot ESOL classes serving hard-to-reach populations

  • Designed a customized curriculum that combines academic and vocational learning, responding to the needs of students

  • And more!
